Boy, was this hard for me. It took me a month because I have never crocheted before. And when I tried to make a second piece, I find it almost impossible. This is also called Turkish Crochet by some. Or Jewelry Crochet. You take pearls and beads and line them up on your thread and then crochet the necklace. Please note that perlen crochet is different from tube crochet which is often used for the old Victorian style "ropes of pearls."
